Install Ruby, GEM and Rails on Linux

Installing Ruby language

Ruby is a cross-platform interpreted language which has many features in common with other ‘scripting’ languages such as Perl and Python.

You can simply install Ruby using following code.

$ sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.3

That’s it! Depending on that GEMs you want to install you should install this here, too.

$ apt-get install make bcrypt libxml-ruby1.9.3 libxml2-dev libxslt-dev libpq-dev g++

Your GEMs are at “/var/lib/gem/1.9.3/”. You should add this here your path:

/var/lib/gem/1.9.3/bin

GEM

GEM is a pretty cool packaging system for Ruby apps. Take a look to http://rubygems.org.

Usually it is installed together with ruby. You can update your latest version gems with this command:

$ sudo gem update --system

Installing framework Rails

Rails is web framework written in ruby language. This can be install using following commands via GEM.

$ sudo gem install rails

Lets enjoy with Ruby on Rails. Happy coding…..
